What is digital employee experience?
The concept of digital employee experience (DEX) is now gaining momentum. IT consultants, product houses and strategists are discovering the possibilities of DEX – but what is it really about?
The answer to what it is may vary depending on who you ask – but let me try to put my finger on it.
Pandemic and the digital workplace
In 2016, the term "digital workplace" was a hot topic and many organizations were quick to jump on board. And then came the pandemic and the digital workplace really took hold. The focus then turned to creating the conditions for everyone in the team to be productive. When the focus was so clearly on productivity, consequences such as digital stress, reduced well-being in the home office and friction in digital collaboration followed like a letter in the mailbox (or, an email in the inbox).
Digital employee experience – the employee's perspective
Digital employee experience is about the individual's perspective in the modern organization. How can they balance productivity and well-being in their daily lives?
One thing is certain: Hybrid work is the new normal. Research firm Forrester reports (in The Anywhere-Work Guide For Tech Pros 2022) that 66% of business leaders are planning for a hybrid or fully remote workplace. This means that employees will have to rely on technology and collaboration models, which in turn must be linked to the company's culture and overall goals – and this is where digital employee experience becomes essential to success.
Digital employee experience is about how employees move between information and different digital tools during their workday. The concept is not a tool or a strategy, but rather a view from the employees' perspective on how your organization's digital ecosystem works. And how it affects them in their daily work.
